A Mongol. The Wutai area, with its Lamaist temples, was a popular pilgrimage for devout Mongols, who came long distances, sometimes bringing their parents for burial here. This photograph brings to mind Blofeld’s description of a similar person some thirty years later: “A richly clad Mongol layman, with an enormous circular fur hat cocked rakishly on one side to display the yellow satin crown, stood languidly staring at me with a half smile upon his lips.”
