Photo of our youthful soldier in (Shaanxi)

“Our youthful soldier in Shaanxi. This twelve-year-old lad wished to go with the foreigners. He was outfitted with appropriate coat (labeled ‘soldier’) and came as one of our ‘protectors.’ The ruins are said to be a temple destroyed during the Moslem Rebellion (referring presumably to the uprisings that scarred northwest China in the 1870s). The table holds an idol. Also an offering by a priest. Passers-by are invited to contribute money.”
